Research Adminsitrative Manager at IITA

IITA is an international non-profit Research-for-Development (R4D) organization created in 1967, governed by a Board of Trustees, and supported primarily by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Our R4D is anchored on the development needs in sub-Saharan Africa. IITA, together with other partners, have developed a novel biological product ‘Aflasafe’ that has proven capacity to reduce aflatoxin contamination of food and feed in sub-Saharan Africa. Aflatoxin is a poison produced by a fungus that infects maize and groundnuts, which are common foods in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. IITA, USDA-ARS, Doreo Partners and AATF are working in a team to develop and implement strategies to make Aflasafe commercially available to Nigerian and other African farmers.

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture seeks suitable candidates for the position of Research Administrative Manager at the Institute’s Headquarters in Ibadan.

RESEARCH ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGER (2-year renewable contract)

DUTIES:

Successful candidate will:
Plan, coordinate and supervise all laboratory-based activities related to aflatoxin biocontrol in Ibadan (sample processing, staff organization, supply management).
Assist in managing projects by ensuring that all deliverables are on track and flag corrective actions when necessary.
Plan, prepare draft and finalize research protocols in consultation with scientists.
Ensure quality of laboratory and, where needed, field experiments.
Responsible for maintaining database of all research results.
Assist in training of students, staff and national program personnel.
Assist with monitoring of expenditure in relation to budget in consultation with the project Administration unit and the Pathology Secretary.
Responsible for the development of a cataloguing system for samples and isolates.
Collect, analyze and interpret data and prepare reports in a timely manner.
Work with non-governmental organizations and community based organizations to disseminate technologies for disease management, particularly for aflatoxin biocontrol.
Liaise with private sector partners, farmer organization, extension services and NGOs to create public-private partnerships for linking farmers using aflatoxin management practices (including AflaSafe) to value-added markets.
Prepare promotional material, draft popular articles for web-based knowledge, dissemination, update new IITA Aflasafe website with relevant materials.
Assist in preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals.
Assist in preparation of technical reports for submission to donors.
Help in liaising with collaborators internally within IITA and externally in other organizations.
Assist in the recruitment of the right quality of personnel in consultation with the Human Resources Unit for position in the unit.
Responsible for the management of project documents in consultation with scientists and administrative units.
Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the Supervisor.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:
MSc degree in Plant Pathology/Microbiology/ Environmental Technology/Biochemistry/ Molecular Biology or other related science discipline.
At least 5 years working experience, of which three years in a managerial role.
At least 3 years experience in a research laboratory dealing with microbiological or chemical analysis.
Strong interpersonal relationship and has good communication skills.
Experience systematically following up on project deliverables.
Excellent and proven management, organizational and coordination skills.
Ability to build and work in teams.
Experience with working with private sector, government and non-governmental organizations.
Prepared to travel whenever required.
Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours if required
Applicants must have high integrity, be honest and possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
He/she must also be able to work under pressure and on weekends when necessary.

Head of Communication at IITA

POSITION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the DDG for Partnerships and Capacity Building, the primary responsibilities of the Head of Communication are to:
Manage and lead the Communication Office and its various units including management of budgets, operations, programmes, projects and activities, both at Headquarters and at the regional hubs.
Provide high level support to IITA management including oversight of the preparation of presentations, think pieces, articles and manuscripts for diverse fora and publications.
Design and implement communication strategies, plans and campaigns to promote IITA R4D activities and development impacts to target audiences, as well as monitoring and evaluation of such strategies and plans.
Identify opportunities for public relations and media campaigns, and oversee such campaigns with relevant background information on IITA.
Correlate policy and activities to improve all aspects of communication within IITA in particular those which require an organisation wide approach.
Oversight of both proactive and reactive media relations
Develop and implement training and development initiatives aimed at improving communications.
Oversee the enhancement of access to R4D knowledge through various media, tools and approaches.
Liaison with stakeholders, donors and partner organisations on relevant communication issues.
Oversee the development of organisational identities.
Assist in the implementation of IITA’s ten year strategy in so far as it relates to the activities within the Communication Office.
Perform any other activities as may be assigned.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
MSc or MA degree in journalism, communications, public affairs, or fields related to agricultural science.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
Minimum of ten years of relevant, substantial and diverse professional experience in all facets of communication and public affairs.
Proven ability to conceptualise, design and implement major campaigns, strategies and programmes, including those taking advantage of current trends in social media.
Knowledge of international development issues and the communications and positioning challenges of international organisations, particularly the CGIAR.
Experience in communications and the ability to write clear, compelling and diverse English-language communications materials for different audiences.
Capability to work with specialists, often in highly technical areas of research, to write, edit, prepare, and produce communications material.
Sensitivity to the diverse perspectives of various organisations, including the public, private and NGO sector.
Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural team and under pressure.
Excellence knowledge of modern communication tools and approaches.
Expertise in web-based publishing and marketing.
Previous experience in developing countries or international organisations, and particularly a successful record in a position similar to that advertised.

Outstanding client service orientation and good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively with donors, colleagues, research institutions and partners.

ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT MANAGER (2-YEAR RENEWABLE CONTRACT)

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is seeking an Organizational Development Manager as organizational development liaison and advisor to IITA Management and facilitates HR initiatives across the Institute. Plans, develops, implements and administers HR programs for NRS across the Institute. Responsible for development and integration of human resource programs and associated, multiple projects to achieve strategic business goals and operational objectives. Responsible for the execution of the HR strategies.

The successful candidate will report to the HR Administrative Manager.

DUTIES
Successful candidate will:
Lead the implementation of the 10-year HR strategy.
Perform advanced, specialized duties in organizational development Responsible for providing high-level advisory support in the administration of human resources program.
Direct the needs assessment for training and staff development to enhance the effectiveness of staff performance in achieving the goals and objectives of the Institute.
Develop and administers various human resources plans and procedures for NRS. Evaluates reports, recommends new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of services performed.
Assist in the planning and organizing of assigned program or section area. Prepare and maintain special internal and external reports as requested by immediate supervisor.
Assist with developing, coordinating and recommending changes for the improvement of workflow in HR.
Implement change management initiatives for the Institute.
Identify/incorporate best practices and lessons learned into program plans.
Provide a broad range of HR consultative services to all levels of NRS.
Facilitate HR learning sessions for all NRS.
Design and develop HR training programs for management and staff in coordination with the Training unit. Develop and maintain instructional programs.
Develop learning activities, audio-visual materials, instructor guides, and lesson plans.
Review evaluations of training courses, objectives, and accomplishments.
Make assessments of effectiveness of training in terms of staff accomplishments and performance.
Train staff on Human Resources issues and practices. Presents course materials.
Consult with management on performance, organizational, and leadership matters. Conducts needs assessments to determine measures required to enhance employee job performance and overall Institute performance.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum of Masters Degree in Human Resources Management (HR). Associate membership of CIPM compulsory.
At least 10 years relevant working experience in relevant management experience in Organisation Development and Training background essential.
Working experience in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams and environments desirable.
Candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills; display maturity and interpersonal skills, be patience and have high stress tolerance.
Proficiency in the use of computers, quick at analyzing issues and proffering quality solution, and be able to handle confidential issues.

DUTIES:

Collect, collate and summarise field data.

Assist to train farmers.
Prepare the weekly plan for all field workers and Technicians in consultation with the Research Associate.

QUALIFICATION/SELECTION CRITERIA
Masters degree in Finance / Business Management or first degree plus ACA / equivalent accountancy professional qualification
A minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience, including two years of experience in an accounting firm or in an international/multinational financial organization.

The ideal candidate must
Have the capacity to work effectively in a team
Be able to communicate orally and in writing in English. 
Be competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture seeks suitable Nigerian Nationals for the following position at the Institute's Headquarters, Ibadan

AUDITOR

DUTIES
Successful candidate will among other things:
- Document, review and evaluate systems and procedures
- Evaluate administrative and accounting controls
- Continuously identify opportunities for efficiency and elimination of wastes ,
- Prepare and review audit programs
- Review donor funded projects. 
- Review operational units at headquarters and Institute's stations
- Prepare reports on activities reviewed
- Carry out surveys and investigations on issues of concern to Management
- Conduct review and provide advice on issues of governance, control and risk
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Supervisor

QUALIFICATION
- Be able to demonstrate evidence of continuous learning
- Possess investigative and business skills
- Be proficient in the use of accounting softwares  e.g. Oracle, DoF e.t.c
- Demonstrate ability to read, understand and audit for compliance with donor agreement

BUDGET OFFICER

DUTIES
Successful candidate will among other things:    
- Develop detailed operating and capital budgets for each financial year.
- Review and develop key underlying assumptions on costs, local staff numbers, anticipated rate increases etc    , .
- Prepare budget input and carry out maintenance of file to organization. update the operating detail report (OPO) with approved operation and capital budget allocations          
- Identify and monitor incoming core funds for booking onto  the financial information System .                              
- Review purchase order requests against budgets. 
- Review account balance, monthly schedules, vacancies etc, and attend to queries that may arise on account charges in relations to budgets.
- Handle insurance matters.          
- Assist in Fixed Assets Management                   
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS
- B.SC./HND in Accounting plus Aca.
- Minimum of 4 years working experience in the Budget and Planning Unit of a large organization
- Be honest and hardworking
- Be a good team player and demonstrate ability to work with minimum supervision
- Sound analytical mind and good knowledge of computer spreadsheet.
- Be willing to put in extra hours

Computer Programmer/ Analyst at IITA

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture seeks suitable Nigerian Nationals for the following position at the Institute’s Headquarters, Ibadan.
 
Job Title: Computer Programmer/Analyst (2-year renewable contract)
 
Duties:
Successful candidate will among other things:
  • Analyse, design and deploy/install software packages, applications and databases.
  • Design and implement ad-hoc solutions to meet immediate user needs.
  • Evaluate specific vendor-supplied software and propose changes required to suit the needs of the Institute
  • Implement data structures and databases according to agreed specifications
  • Code and test-run in-house developed applications
  • Deploy fully tested applications in the production environment
  • Document the system and writer user manuals for the end-users
  • Provide training and support to the end-users to enable them work fairly independently on their own.
  • Build (other) sub-systems around vendor supplied packages to handle aspects of the Institute’s information needs which are incorporated in such proprietary products.
 
Qualification and Experience:
  • B.Sc. in Computer Science or related IT discipline. Minimum of 5 years hands-on experience in robust computer applications programming and system analysis, with emphasis on Business and Management systems.
  • Programming experience on web-based tools: ASP, ASP.NET, ASP.NET.MVC, Java, JavaScript, AJAX, ORACLE application development tools (PL/SQL, Forms, Reports, Toad etc) is important.
  • Experience in relational database systems: ORACLE 11g, SQL Server 2005/2008, etc is desirable.
  • Experience on using modern server operating systems, such as: Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008, and UNIX (and its variants like Sun Solaris, Linux, etc) would be an advantage.
 
The ideal candidate must
  • Be able to communicate clearly and unambiguously in speech and in writing
  • Be alert, level-headed and possess high intellectual capability
  • Possess a clear analytical mind, innovative and be able to work with minimum supervision.
